ABSTRACT:
The general objective of ATRIUM project is to ensure a sustainable use of bio-based materials to produce bio-composites; to develop bio-based, recycled and/or natural materials (bio-PE/MDF; bio-PA/hemp/natural fibres; Mycelium on hemp substrates with and without bio-PU coating; hemp-lime) as base materials to up-scale the production of intermediate products or bio-composites (bioplastic profiles, Mycelium tiles & panels, fibre reinforced bioplastic pellets; low-density hemp composites) and validate their performance into final consumer-oriented products. Among such products will be outdoor flooring, indoor flooring, acoustic panels, outdoor plug and play green wall system and building blocks. They will be produced under the principals contributing to the climate-neutral and zero-pollution goals by replacing fossil-based alternatives.
In this way, ATRIUM will not only provide more safety and non-toxic construction solutions but also boost the creation of sustainable bio-based value chains and the integration of efficient biotechnology to develop the circular economy and bioeconomy sectors.
To do this, ATRIUM will develop production pilot lines that integrate efficient and flexible technologies (co-extrusion, foaming, injection moulding, additive manufacturing and biofabrications) and engage the key actors for the design acceptance and certification of the new products.
ATRIUM will also promote social dialogue in order to bring the goals and assumptions of new solutions in the construction sector closer to the citizens of the European Union and to disseminate its ideas in urban and rural environments through appropriate communication, local initiatives and activities.
